Plant Trees, Save Hotnagar Movement

The Largest Native Tree Plantation Campaign in Murshidabad

Date: 19 July 2026

Location: Hotnagar Village, Near Mahula, Murshidabad, West Bengal

Building a Living Green Shield for the Bhagirathi

Mission Green Universe Foundation, in collaboration with Climate School and several partner organizations, successfully launched the “Plant Trees, Save Hotnagar Movement”, one of the largest community-led native tree plantation campaigns in Murshidabad. The initiative aims to protect the newly constructed embankment along the Bhagirathi River while restoring biodiversity and promoting climate resilience through large-scale plantation of indigenous tree species.

Hotnagar, a small riverside village in Murshidabad, has long been threatened by severe riverbank erosion. Surrounded by an oxbow lake on one side and the Bhagirathi River on the other, the village has witnessed continuous land loss over the years. Thanks to the tireless efforts of local residents and the construction of a nearly one-kilometre protective embankment by the Irrigation Department, the immediate threat has been reduced. However, ensuring the long-term stability of the embankment requires ecological restoration alongside engineering solutions.

To strengthen this critical riverbank naturally, Mission Green Universe Foundation initiated a Mega Native Tree Plantation Campaign, creating a living green barrier that will protect the embankment, conserve soil, improve biodiversity and support a healthier river ecosystem.

Objectives of the Campaign

Protect the Hotnagar embankment through nature-based solutions.

Reduce the risk of riverbank erosion along the Bhagirathi River.

Restore native biodiversity by planting indigenous tree species.
