To promote environmental sustainability and native biodiversity, Mission Green Universe Foundation organized a large-scale Seed Ball Making Campaign on 12th July 2024. The event took place at the foundation’s free nursery in Nowda, Murshidabad, and involved active participation of students and local volunteers.
-
Objectives:
✅ Youth Engagement: Encourage hands-on involvement of youth in ecological restoration.
✅ Native Seed Preservation: Promote local biodiversity by using indigenous species.
✅ Cost-Effective Afforestation: Reduce plantation costs by promoting natural germination.
✅ Climate Action: Support long-term climate mitigation through greening efforts.
✅ Community Empowerment: Involve local people in nature conservation and awareness.
-
Highlights of the Campaign:
Over 100 participants, including students from nearby schools and enthusiastic volunteers.
A target of 10,000 seed balls was successfully achieved.
Traditional and low-cost methods were used with eco-friendly ingredients like soil, cow dung, and compost.
Special focus was given on native and climate-resilient species like Neem, Arjun, Bakul, Chatim, etc.
Demonstration sessions were held to teach the seed ball making technique to new volunteers.
-
Methodology:
Seeds were sourced locally and verified for viability.
Clay soil, compost, and cow dung were mixed in appropriate proportions.
Seeds were enclosed within the mix and shaped into balls.
The seed balls were dried under shade and stored for later monsoon dispersal in barren and deforested areas.
-
Community Response:
The campaign created awareness and enthusiasm among the youth and villagers. Many participants expressed interest in organizing similar events in their own areas. The initiative served as a model for low-cost reforestation and youth-driven climate action.
-
Conclusion & Future Steps:
The Seed Ball Campaign by Mission Green Universe Foundation was a resounding success. With simple techniques and strong community support, it demonstrated how grassroots efforts can support environmental change.
Moving forward:
The seed balls will be dispersed strategically during the monsoon.
Similar drives will be held in other blocks of Murshidabad.
Follow-up monitoring will ensure germination and survival rates.
Photos and videos of the campaign were captured and shared through social media platforms and local newspapers to inspire a wider audience.
