World Biodiversity Day Celebrated at Mahula Through Climate School Initiative

Mahula, Murshidabad | World Biodiversity Day 2026

Guided by the philosophy “Nature Above All” and inspired by the United Nations message “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” the Climate School, an initiative of the missiongreenuniverse celebrated World Biodiversity Day with due significance at Mahula under Beldanga Police Station in Murshidabad, West Bengal.

The event was organized with the objective of promoting biodiversity conservation and strengthening environmental awareness among students and local communities. A series of engaging educational activities were conducted, including discussions on biodiversity conservation, an introductory session on snake identification, snake rescue techniques, a herbarium-making workshop, and a biodiversity quiz competition. Additionally, a special projector-based seminar featuring information on nearly 30 species of snakes was organized for participants.

The snake awareness seminar was led by Dr. Suniti Kumar Mondal, retired professor of Sripat Singh College and noted science writer, who offered an in-depth explanation of snake species, ecological significance, and awareness regarding human-snake coexistence.

Environmental activist Ardhendu Biswas, popularly known as the “Vivek Brikkho (Tree of Wisdom) of Murshidabad,” addressed the gathering and shared the vision, mission, and future plans of Climate School, emphasizing the importance of environmental education in shaping a sustainable future.

A practical demonstration on snake rescue techniques was conducted by wildlife rescuer Saptam Mondal, while the herbarium workshop and biodiversity quiz were facilitated by environmental activist Sebika Basak, encouraging participants to learn through hands-on experiences.

 

The programme witnessed active participation from Climate School interns, students from the Mahula area, and local community members. On the occasion, five meritorious Higher Secondary students from the locality were also felicitated in recognition of their academic achievements.

To spread an eco-friendly message and inspire sustainable practices, all participants were presented with saplings, books, and seed pens. According to the organizers, the core objective of the initiative is to increase environmental awareness at the grassroots level and nurture future generations into nature-loving, compassionate, and responsible global citizens. The entire event was monitored by Santosh Kumar Ghosh,the President of the MGU Foundation.

The event reflected a strong commitment toward biodiversity conservation and demonstrated how local action can contribute meaningfully to global environmental impact.
